Background on California Working Families Policy Summit - 2000

The first Summit was held in January 2000 at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Summit 2000 was hosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Families. The California Commission on the Status of Women was an active partner in the development and funding of the Summit. The California Legislative Women's Caucus was an event co-sponsor, and The Women’s Foundation also provided support for the Summit.

The Summit was founded and directed by Kate Karpilow, Ph.D., now Executive Director at the California Center for Research on Women and Families (CCRWF).

The focus of Summit 2000 was two-fold: the family friendly workplace and economic empowerment. Held in January, the Summit was strategically timed to be a forum for legislators, legislative and Administration staff, advocates, and other leaders to identify possible legislation, administrative actions or state regulations for the upcoming year. At the Summit, respected advocates put forth specific proposals, expert provocateurs responded with comments, and the audience had an opportunity to comment and respond. Participants in the audience were provided with fact sheets, legislative histories and lists of stakeholders for each issue discussed.

A statewide advisory committee played a central role in determining the issues to be addressed. Special recognition and thanks are due to the advocates who spent considerable time to formulate their recommendations. Issues addressed at Summit 2000 and the advocates who presented included:
