The mission of the California Center for Research on Women and Families is to provide information, facilitation, analysis and policy options to help leaders improve the lives of women, families and children in our state and nation.
To accomplish our mission, professionals at the Center typically work collaboratively with individuals from a wide variety of fields and backgrounds. Research, development of educational materials, facilitation, training and other convenings hosted by the Center often involve policy makers from all levels of government; academic scholars and other researchers; national, state and local program managers; non-profit leaders; journalists; and other issue experts, consumers and community leaders.
In addition to our commitment to collaboration and broad-based information gathering, professionals at the Center also have a strong commitment to translating research into action and recommendations into policy. Work is not complete following publication of materials or conference proceedings. Assisting leaders with implementation and program evaluation are equally important aspects of the Center staff's commitment to social change.

The California Center for Research on Women and Families is an affiliated program of the Public Health Institute. The Public Health Institute (PHI) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health, well-being and quality of life for people throughout California, across the nation and around the world. As one of the largest and most comprehensive public health organizations in the nation, PHI focuses its efforts in two distinct, but complementary, ways. PHI promotes and sustains independent, innovative research, training and demonstration programs, many in collaboration with the private health care system and community-based organizations. PHI also serves as a partner with government to support its role in assessment, policy development and assurance.
For thirty-five years, PHI has advanced the public's health by serving as a forum for state and regional responses to public health problems and by providing a proactive environment for research, education and practice.
The quality programs and projects of PHI improve the health of people and communities and inform the development of public policy. At the forefront of current issues, PHI is an incubator for innovative community-oriented solutions to emerging public health issues and a vital connector for traditional and non-traditional public health partnerships. PHI acts as a convener for public health dialogue, discussion and leadership development opportunities.
PHI is a resource for researchers and professionals who view the social, environmental, economic and demographic changes in our communities in terms of the impact on health and well-being. These experts work to deepen understanding of incidence and causation, create appropriate strategies and systems, and support the building of capacity within communities and institutions to develop the most effective solutions.
Since its inception in 1964, the organization has grown from a handful of epidemiologists and researchers working with the California Department of Health Services (CDHS) to one of the largest public health nonprofit agencies in the United States, with an annual budget of $65 million and a staff of nearly 550, including more than 120 researchers, community specialists, and project directors conducting approximately 400 projects funded by state and federal government and private foundations.
